General

The Linegard™ PGFM is a ground fault sensing module that operates in tandem with a UL 489 Airpax™ hydraulic magnetic branch circuit breaker. The sensing module monitors an electrical circuit via an external differential current transformer, upon a ground fault, it actively severs the load by means of the circuit breaker. Also available in an ELCI “marine” version.

LineGard™ PGFM Series: Advanced Ground Fault Sensing Module

Introduction

In electrical systems, ground faults present a significant risk, especially in environments where moisture or water is present. The LineGard™ PGFM series offers an innovative solution for protecting electrical systems and users from such faults. Designed to detect and mitigate ground faults effectively, this module ensures safety and compliance with international standards.

Amironic, the exclusive representative of Sensata Technologies in Israel, proudly introduces the PGFM series. Manufactured by North Shore Safety in collaboration with Sensata Technologies, this series is a reliable and efficient choice for ground fault protection in industrial, residential, and marine environments.

What is a Ground Fault?

A ground fault occurs when unintended current flows from an electrical system to the ground, bypassing the intended circuit path. This can happen due to insulation failure, damaged wires, or accidental contact with live components. In such scenarios, the current may pass through a person’s body or sensitive equipment, causing severe injury, fatality, or damage.

Ground fault circuit interrupters (GFCI), commonly referred to as residual current devices (RCD), play a critical role in identifying these faults. By monitoring the current balance between live (hot) and neutral wires, GFCIs can detect any imbalance and disconnect the circuit within milliseconds, preventing harm.

Key Features of the PGFM Series

  1. Advanced Fault Detection:
    • Continuously monitors current balance in conductors to detect faults with high precision (27 mA nominal, 30 mA maximum).
    • Utilizes differential current transformers for accurate fault detection.
  2. Rapid Response:
    • Disconnects the circuit within 60 to 100 milliseconds upon detecting a fault, ensuring user safety.
  3. Durable Design:
    • Features a chemical- and UV-resistant enclosure, ideal for harsh conditions.
    • Operates reliably in a wide temperature range: -35°C to +66°C.
  4. Wide Compatibility:
    • Suitable for single-phase (120 VAC), split-phase (120/240 VAC), and three-phase configurations.
  5. LED Indicators:
    • Provides clear visual signals for power status and fault conditions.
  6. International Compliance:
    • Meets UL 943 and UL 1053 standards for safety.
    • Fully compliant with ABYC E-11 for marine and industrial applications.

Applications of the PGFM Series

  1. Residential Systems: Provides enhanced safety for households, detecting and mitigating ground faults in critical areas like kitchens, bathrooms, and outdoor spaces.
  2. Industrial Facilities: Protects sensitive equipment and personnel in factories, warehouses, and manufacturing plants where electrical risks are higher.
  3. Marine Environments: Ensures safe operation of electrical systems on boats and in marinas, complying with ABYC E-11 standards.
  4. Temporary Installations: Ideal for events, construction sites, and portable power generators, offering reliable protection in transient setups.
  5. Power Distribution Networks: Enhances safety in medium- and low-voltage distribution systems by mitigating fault risks at the source.
  6. Critical Infrastructure: Safeguards electrical panels in hospitals, data centers, and telecommunications facilities.

Installation and Testing

  1. Installation Steps:
    • Disconnect power before starting the installation.
    • Identify line and load wires according to the wiring diagram.
    • Connect wires securely and install the module in a dry, protected location.
  2. Testing Procedure:
    • Press the “TEST” button to verify functionality. The green LED should turn off, and the red LED should illuminate as the breaker trips.
    • Reset the system by pressing the “RESET” button and manually restoring the breaker.
    • Perform routine tests to ensure the module remains in optimal working condition.

Conclusion

The LineGard™ PGFM series represents a leap forward in ground fault protection technology. Its advanced detection capabilities, durable design, and wide applicability make it a trusted choice for safeguarding electrical systems in residential, industrial, and marine environments.
