Programmable PWM Speed Controller for Brushed DC Motors

The GM-CTRL-1 is a programmable PWM speed controller designed for brushed DC motors operating from 6 to 60 VDC. It allows precise motor speed control, programmable acceleration and deceleration, adjustable PWM frequency, and configurable operating limits for OEM, industrial and laboratory applications.

Key Features

  • PWM speed control for brushed DC motors
  • Operating voltage: 6–60 VDC
  • Continuous output current up to 20 A
  • Peak output current up to 30 A
  • Adjustable PWM frequency (1–100 kHz)
  • Programmable Soft Start
  • Programmable Soft Stop
  • Adjustable minimum and maximum speed
  • Digital rotary encoder with Start/Stop push button
  • LED display showing output level
  • Non-volatile memory retains settings after power loss
  • Compact panel-mount design

Typical Applications

The GM-CTRL-1 is suitable for controlling brushed DC motors used in:

  • Industrial automation
  • Robotics
  • Laboratory equipment
  • Conveyor systems
  • Packaging machinery
  • Medical equipment
  • Textile machines
  • Material handling systems
  • OEM machinery
  • Test equipment

Getting Started

The GM-CTRL-1 is designed to make speed control of brushed DC motors straightforward.

A typical setup requires only three components:

  • DC power supply
  • Brushed DC motor
  • GM-CTRL-1 controller

After connecting the power supply and motor, simply power up the controller, adjust the desired speed using the rotary encoder and, if required, configure parameters such as Soft Start, maximum speed or PWM frequency.

Programmable Parameters

The GM-CTRL-1 allows complete customization of motor behavior through six programmable parameters.

Function Description Range
F1 Soft Start Time 0–10 s
F2 Soft Stop Time 0–10 s
F3 Minimum Speed Limit 0–80%
F4 Maximum Speed Limit 0–100%
F5 Speed Adjustment Step 1%, 2%, 5%, 10%, 15%, 20%, 25%
F6 PWM Frequency 1–100 kHz (15 kHz default)

These parameters enable the controller to be optimized for different motor sizes, load characteristics and application requirements.

User Guide

Front Panel Controls

The controller is operated using a single rotary encoder with integrated push-button.

Installation

The GM-CTRL-1 is designed for straightforward panel installation.

Power Supply

Use a DC power supply only.

Supported voltage:

6–60 VDC

Motor Connection

Connect only conventional brushed DC motors with two-wire terminals.

Do not use with brushless (BLDC) motors.

Wiring

Connect the power supply observing the correct polarity.

Connect the motor to the output terminals.

After power-up, adjust the required speed using the encoder.

Operating Principle

The controller regulates motor speed using Pulse Width Modulation (PWM).

Instead of reducing the supply voltage, PWM rapidly switches the motor supply on and off while varying the duty cycle.

This method provides:

  • Higher efficiency
  • Lower power dissipation
  • Better low-speed torque
  • Smooth speed control
  • Reduced motor heating

Advantages

Compared with basic PWM controllers, the GM-CTRL-1 provides:

  • Digital parameter programming
  • Soft Start and Soft Stop
  • Adjustable PWM frequency
  • Speed limiting
  • Repeatable settings
  • Non-volatile memory
  • Professional panel-mount installation

Frequently Asked Questions

Can this controller operate brushless (BLDC) motors?

No.

It is designed exclusively for brushed DC motors with a conventional two-wire connection.

Will my settings be lost after power is removed?

No.

All parameters are stored in non-volatile memory and remain unchanged after power loss.

Why adjust the PWM frequency?

Different motors can exhibit different acoustic noise, efficiency and operating characteristics.

Adjusting the PWM frequency allows the controller to be optimized for the application.

Can I prevent operators from running the motor too fast?

Yes.

The maximum speed can be limited using parameter F4.

Can the controller reduce mechanical shock during startup?

Yes.

The programmable Soft Start function gradually increases motor speed, reducing mechanical stress and current peaks.

Is the controller suitable for OEM equipment?

Yes.

Its compact size, programmable parameters and panel-mount design make it well suited for OEM machine integration.

Compatible GM Series Motors

The GM-CTRL-1 is compatible with the following GM Series brushed DC gear motors:

  • GM11
  • GM12
  • GM13
  • GM14
  • GM15
  • GM16
  • GM17

Troubleshooting

The Motor Does Not Start

Possible causes:

  • Verify that the power supply is connected and operating correctly.
  • Check that the supply voltage is within the supported 6–60 VDC range.
  • Ensure the motor is a brushed DC motor with a two-wire connection.
  • Verify all wiring connections and polarity.
  • Make sure the minimum speed is not set to 0%.
  • Check that the motor is not mechanically blocked.

The Motor Runs Too Slowly

Possible causes:

  • Increase the speed setting.
  • Verify that the maximum speed limit (F4) is not restricting the output.
  • Check that the power supply voltage matches the motor rating.
  • Inspect the mechanical load for excessive resistance.

The Motor Starts Abruptly

Possible causes:

  • Increase the Soft Start time (F1).
  • Verify that the motor and load are correctly matched.
  • Check for excessive mechanical inertia.

The Motor Stops Too Quickly

Possible causes:

  • Increase the Soft Stop time (F2).
  • Check whether the application requires gradual deceleration.

Audible Motor Noise

Possible causes:

  • Adjust the PWM frequency (F6).
  • Some motors operate more quietly at higher PWM frequencies.
  • Mechanical gearbox noise may be unrelated to the controller.

The Controller Does Not Save Settings

Possible causes:

  • Ensure the settings are saved according to the programming procedure.
  • Verify that the controller is not powered off before the save operation is completed.

The Motor Direction Is Incorrect

Possible causes:

  • Reverse the polarity of the motor connections.
  • Disconnect power before changing the wiring.
