Thermal Motor Protector

Home Products Sensors Thermostats Thermal Motor Protector

Thermal Motor Protectors for Motors, Transformers and Electrical Equipment

Protecting motors from overheating is essential for improving reliability, preventing equipment failure and extending service life. Klixon® Thermal Motor Protectors from Sensata Technologies provide automatic over-temperature protection for electric motors, transformers, ballasts, compressors, pumps, HVAC equipment and many other electrical systems.

These self-resetting thermal protectors disconnect the circuit when the preset temperature is reached and automatically reconnect after the device cools down. Depending on the application, Sensata offers different protector families optimized for compact appliances, industrial motors and demanding OEM applications.

Available Product Families

  • Temperature range: 45°C to 150°C
  • Compact plastic package
  • Automatic reset
  • Multiple lead options
  • Suitable for winding installation
  • UL, ENEC and CQC approvals

7AM – Heavy-Duty Thermal Motor Protector

The Klixon® 7AM series is intended for higher power and more demanding applications where higher current capability and excellent long-term reliability are required.

Unlike the YS11, the 7AM uses a welded steel housing with a precision snap-action bimetal disc. Every temperature rating is individually calibrated, providing repeatable opening temperatures and long operating life. Sensata states that more than three billion 7AM protectors have been sold worldwide.

Typical applications include:

  • Industrial motors
  • Transformers
  • Compressors
  • Pumps
  • HVAC systems
  • Battery systems
  • Power supplies
  • Industrial equipment

Main characteristics

  • Temperature range: 70°C to 175°C
  • Up to 22A contact rating
  • Steel sealed housing
  • High thermal sensitivity
  • Excellent vibration resistance
  • Suitable for impregnation processes
  • UL, ENEC and CQC approvals

Need Help Selecting the Correct Part Number?

Choosing the wrong thermal protector can lead to nuisance tripping, insufficient motor protection or reduced product lifetime. Selecting the correct Klixon® part number requires consideration of operating temperature, reset temperature, current, installation method, housing type, lead configuration and environmental conditions.

If you already have an existing part number, we can identify an equivalent replacement. If you are designing a new product, our engineers can recommend the most suitable YS11 or 7AM configuration for your application.

Contact Amironic for assistance in selecting the correct thermal motor protector for your design.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

What is a thermal motor protector?

A thermal motor protector is a safety device that disconnects electrical power when the motor reaches a predetermined temperature. Once the protector cools to its reset temperature, it automatically restores power, helping prevent overheating and extending motor life.

What is the difference between the YS11 and 7AM thermal motor protectors?

The YS11 is a compact thermal protector with a plastic housing, primarily intended for small motors and household appliances. The 7AM features a welded steel housing, higher current capability and a wider operating temperature range, making it better suited for industrial motors, transformers and demanding applications.

Can I replace a thermal protector with another one having the same opening temperature?

Not necessarily. The opening temperature is only one parameter. The replacement should also match the current rating, reset characteristics, housing type, installation method, lead configuration and overall application requirements.

How do I choose the correct thermal motor protector?

The correct protector depends on several factors, including operating temperature, current, mounting location, available space, environmental conditions and the required electrical ratings. Selecting the proper part number ensures reliable protection and long service life.

Do thermal motor protectors automatically reset?

Yes. Both the Klixon® YS11 and 7AM series are self-resetting devices. After the protector opens due to excessive temperature, it automatically resets once the temperature drops below the specified reset point.

Can thermal motor protectors sense both temperature and current?

Yes. Depending on the installation method and application, thermal motor protectors can respond to both ambient temperature and the heat generated by motor current. This provides effective protection against overload and overheating.

Where are thermal motor protectors commonly used?

Typical applications include electric motors, pumps, compressors, transformers, HVAC equipment, ballasts, household appliances, industrial machinery and power supplies.

Can thermal motor protectors be mounted directly on the motor winding?

Yes. The YS11 series is specifically designed for installation on motor windings or outside resin-packed motors. The 7AM series is widely used in motors, transformers and industrial equipment where a rugged steel construction is preferred.

Are different opening temperatures available?

Yes. Both series are available in multiple calibrated temperature ratings, allowing the protector to be matched to the thermal characteristics of the application. The YS11 covers 45°C to 150°C, while the 7AM covers 70°C to 175°C.

Can Amironic help me select the correct part number?

Yes. Our engineers can help you select the most suitable Klixon® thermal motor protector based on your application, operating temperature, current, installation method and environmental conditions. We can also recommend an equivalent replacement for an existing part.
