Introduction

In many military and industrial electrical systems, circuit protection must deliver reliable performance, stable behavior, and mechanical robustness under demanding environmental conditions.

At the same time, not every system requires the strict product identity and qualification framework associated with circuit breakers defined under M39019.

In many real-world applications, system engineers are looking for a solution that provides:

  • Electrical stability

  • Mechanical durability

  • Front panel sealing

  • Predictable trip behavior

  • Lower system cost

This is exactly where the Airpax IULN and IUGN series fit.

These circuit breakers are hydraulic-magnetic breakers sealed at the front panel, designed to meet the requirements of MIL-PRF-55629 and tested according to MIL-STD-202 environmental standards.

As a result, they are widely used in rugged electronic systems where reliability and environmental resistance are required, but where the strict product identity of M39019 is not necessary.

In many applications, they provide an excellent balance between performance, durability, and cost efficiency.

MIL-PRF-55629 – A Performance Standard for Magnetic Circuit Breakers

MIL-PRF-55629 is a U.S. military performance specification defining requirements for hydraulic-magnetic circuit breakers.

The standard includes requirements in areas such as:

  • Electrical performance

  • Environmental durability

  • Trip behavior

  • Long-term reliability

  • Environmental testing

Circuit breakers meeting this specification must pass a series of demanding tests. However, unlike M39019, the standard does not define a fixed product identity tied to a specific slash-sheet configuration.

In other words, MIL-PRF-55629 focuses on performance requirements rather than rigid product definition.

This provides greater design flexibility while still maintaining a high level of reliability.

For many rugged electronic systems, this approach offers a very practical balance between qualification rigor and system cost.

The IUL and IUG Families – Compact and Rugged Circuit Protection

The IUL and IUG circuit breaker families from Airpax were developed specifically for rugged electronic equipment operating in demanding environments.

Key characteristics include:

  • Hydraulic-magnetic technology

  • Compact mechanical design

  • Stable trip behavior

  • Multiple panel mounting options

  • High environmental durability

These circuit breakers are particularly well suited for systems such as:

  • Tactical communication equipment

  • Ground-based electronic systems

  • Naval electronics

  • Portable test equipment

  • Mobile control systems

  • Rugged electronic panels

In these applications, designers require reliable circuit protection combined with mechanical durability and environmental resistance.

Metal Toggle Handle and Front Panel Sealing

The IULN and IUGN variants incorporate a metal toggle handle with front panel sealing, a design feature that is particularly valuable in rugged environments.

This mechanical configuration provides several important advantages:

  • Improved sealing against moisture and dust

  • Higher durability in field environments

  • A robust and positive mechanical feel during operation

  • Compatibility with ruggedized front panels

Because the sealing is located at the front panel interface, these breakers can be used in systems where the equipment may be exposed to:

  • Humidity

  • Dust

  • Outdoor field conditions

  • Marine environments

For many rugged electronic enclosures, this feature significantly improves overall system reliability.

Operating Principle – Hydraulic-Magnetic Technology

Like other Airpax circuit breaker families, the IULN and IUGN series use hydraulic-magnetic trip technology.

This design is based on two key mechanisms:

Magnetic sensing mechanism

The magnetic coil generates a force proportional to the current flowing through the circuit.

Hydraulic time-delay mechanism

A viscous fluid dashpot regulates the motion of the armature, creating a controlled delay.

When the current rises above the defined threshold:

  • The magnetic field pulls the armature

  • The hydraulic delay mechanism regulates movement

  • The breaker opens according to the defined time-current curve

One of the most important advantages of this mechanism is trip curve stability.

Stable Trip Characteristics

Unlike thermal circuit breakers based on bimetal elements, hydraulic-magnetic breakers are largely independent of ambient temperature.

This results in several important benefits:

  • Stable time-current trip characteristics

  • Reduced nuisance tripping

  • Predictable response to overload conditions

  • Consistent behavior over time

In systems containing loads such as:

  • Electric motors

  • Power converters

  • Communication equipment

  • Complex electronic assemblies

this stability becomes extremely important for reliable operation.

Environmental Durability – MIL-STD-202 Testing

The circuit breakers in this family are tested according to MIL-STD-202, a widely used environmental testing standard for electronic components.

The test methods include evaluations such as:

  • Vibration resistance

  • Mechanical shock

  • Humidity exposure

  • Temperature cycling

  • Environmental durability

These tests help ensure that the circuit breaker can operate reliably even in challenging environmental conditions.

Typical Applications

IULN and IUGN circuit breakers are used in a wide range of rugged electronic systems, including:

  • Tactical communication systems

  • Ground-based military electronics

  • Naval electronic equipment

  • Portable test systems

  • Industrial control systems

  • Rugged electronic panels

In many of these systems, engineers require a durable and reliable protection device, but without the strict qualification framework associated with M39019 circuit breakers.

For these applications, the IULN and IUGN series provide a highly effective solution.

Position Within the Airpax Product Family

The Airpax portfolio includes several circuit breaker families designed for different application environments.

In general terms:

  • AP Series – military breakers defined under M39019

  • IUL / IUG Series – hydraulic-magnetic breakers designed to meet MIL-PRF-55629 performance requirements

  • Other families – solutions for industrial and commercial systems

The IULN and IUGN series occupy an important position in this portfolio.

They deliver rugged performance and hydraulic-magnetic protection, while allowing more flexibility in terms of cost and qualification requirements.

In many applications, the optimal solution is a reliable hydraulic-magnetic breaker that offers environmental durability, panel sealing, and stable electrical behavior, while maintaining greater flexibility in terms of specification and cost.

The Airpax IULN and IUGN series deliver exactly this combination:

  • Stable hydraulic-magnetic protection

  • Strong environmental durability

  • Sealed front-panel installation

  • Proven technology

  • Long-term reliability

For this reason, these circuit breakers continue to appear in a wide range of rugged electronic systems worldwide.
