Background

Electrical systems in marine environments face unique challenges due to the presence of water, which can act as a conductor, increasing the risk of ground faults. When an individual comes into contact with a live (hot) wire and a path to ground, it can result in a dangerous current flow through the body, potentially causing injury or fatality.

Marine environments exacerbate this risk, which is why the American Boat & Yacht Council (ABYC) E-11 standards mandate the use of Ground Fault Circuit Interrupters (GFCI).
